People refused to issue NVC could face jail, immigration department

An directive issued by Immigration Department on the Nationality Verification Card (NVC) on 23 December said those who provide incorrect fact for the NVC card could be charged under the section 6 (3) of the Law on Registration of the People in Union of Myanmar adopted in 1949. It said those whose application are in processing for the Burma Citizenship Law of 1982 will have to accept NVC card. Those who have to take NVC card are also those who lost or damaged their temporary citizenship identification cards, those who are holding older version of the citizenship card, for unable to provide proof on their citizenship eligibility, as well as those who could not proof that their parents were the full citizens of Myanmar and those who are living in Myanmar since pre-independence period and not holding any citizenship card. These categories of people would be issued with NVC as they will have to go through process of citizenship verification. The directive said NVC cards would be issued to them systematically according to the procedure. And those who are ask to issue NVC must do so. If an applicant failed to furnish facts required for citizenship verification under the Law on Registration of the People Living in Myanmar or if applicant are failed to provide fact which are required to submit under the section 6 of the regulation on Registration of the People Living in Myanmar which was enacted in 1951, such a person would be prosecuted under the section 6 (3) of 1949 Law on Registration Law of People Living in Myanmar. Under the section, maximum two and a half years of imprisonment and fine or both could be imposed. The directive said those who come into Myanmar to be eligible for NVC card would face legal actions.
