Here is why -
There have been a series of demonstrations in major cities in Rakhine State since 10 February against a radio station broadcast by the Ministry of Information.
Demonstrations against May Yu FM radio station was held in Maungtaw, Buthitaung, Taunggyup, Mauk U, Myay Bone and Kyauk Taw.
The protests were to show their opposition against broadcast by May Yu in Bengali language. The radio station was launched on 1 February.
The demonstrators chanted slogans to immediately stop broadcast, not to grant rights to the people who are not the citizens of Myanmar, as well as to implement the Burma Citizenship Law of 1982 immediately and not to grant citizenship identification cards to those who are not eligible. The protestors also ask the government to respect the voice of the citizens.
The Ministry of Information in a statement issued on 1 February said the radio station was launch to allow people in Maungtaw and the other parts of northern Rakhine State to get timely information on the situation in the region, to disseminate information to the areas in northern Rakhine State, which was affected by recent violent incidents. Also, to inform the people in the region on what different government ministries are doing for the regional development. It said the radio station was just to address immediate information need in the region.
