Due to recent wave of killings in Maungtaw, people there are afraid to talk the truth in front of the investigation commission. Recently at least 13 people including a ward administrator were killed in the Northern Rakhine State town. According to a statement issued by the State Counsellor Office, the killings were during 2016 February and February 2017. It said another eight people are missing. During the area clearing operations conducted in the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Maungtaw, security forces are accused of committing rape, extra judicial killings and arson attacks. U Zaw Myint, the secretary of the government-appointed Rakhine Investigation Commission said the local people are too afraid to speak the truth after a series of killings.
