This report is Confirmed true and is of Low Priority. Here is why -
The authorities in Rakhine State have imposed ban on fishing in the aftermath of 9 October attacks on Myanmar security guards. But they lifted ban in January but only allow those who have Nationalities Verification Card (NVC). People who do not have NVC card were neither allow to do fishing or to cross the border into Bangladesh, said an Immigration officer in Maungtaw Township. A member of Myanmar border security force said most of the fishermen go for fishing in Nat River, which divide, between Myanmar and Bangladesh and also in Bay of Bengal, so they are still vulnerable to the security threats. According to an official at the District Department of Fisheries said there are 300 coastal fishing vessels and 1300 privately own boats are operating in Maungtaw. Moreover, only Rohingya people in Maungtaw who have NVC card are allow to cross the border into Bangladesh. According to an immigration official in Maungtaw, that only those Rohingya people who have NVC card could board on the boat to travel to Bangladesh, and the rule was prescribed by the Union Government. The NVC cards, which are issued as substitute to the temporary registration card or also known as White Card, has only two-year validity, which make people reluctant to issue the card. And the new rule on allowing those with NVC card to cross Border was introduced to attract people to issue the card. The Information Committee of the State Counsellor Office said out of the 400 000 people who surrender their White Card only 6000 have issued NVC. Reference: 7 Day Daily
