Here is why -
The Advisory Commission on the Rakhine State State has suggested the government to conduct independent and credible investigation into the alleged human rights abuses committed by security forces since October. The commission led by a former secretary of the United Nations Mr Kofi Annan said in an interim report publish earlier this month.
The interim report made 30 recommendations, also including to grant unimpeded access to the humanitarian agencies and independent media to the conflict areas in northern Rakhine State. And to conduct verification of citizenship of Rohingya population in the state.
The report also recommend to give full rights for travel, access to education and healthcare to those who are eligible to citizenship. Also to adopt a strategy for citizenship verification process and to start the process of resettlement of internally displaced people.
The government welcomed the recommendations by the commission. A statement issued by the State Counsellor Office on 16 March said it will try to implement some of the recommendations promptly and some of them would be implemented in accordance with the local conditions. However, it promise to promptly take action on those issues as well.
The commission was established last August. The interim report was issued at a media briefing held in Yangon on 16 March.
