Here is why -
Most of the 17 Bengali youths from Rakhine State who were arrested in October for entering into Yangon without travel permits get two years jail sentence each under immigration offense.
They were sentenced after the court in North Okkalappa Township found them guilty and the sentence announced on 21 November. They were arrested from a home in Shwe Pauk Kan satellite town in North Okkalapa Township on 22 October.
They were charged travelling without permission which is an offense under the sections 6(2) and 683) of the 1949 Registration Act of the people live in Myanmar
The youths were originally from Min Bya, Kyauktaw and Mrauk U townships of Rakhine State. They were trafficked to Yangon by brokers.
13 people out of 17 were sentenced to 2 years rigorous imprisonment, the rest four are minors, and they were ordered to stay in the youth training school in Thanlyin.
According to the police record, they were trafficked to Yangon to go illegally to Malaysia for work. They paid trafficker Kyat 1.1 million per person.
In a similar incident, a court in Tamwe Township has sentenced five Rohingya youths to two years rigorous imprisonment after they were arrested on immigration offense a week earlier
