Video of police abuse went viral amid denial by the military chief on reports of abuses

After the Commander- in -Chief of Myanmar army denied the reports of abuses against Rohingya a video of a group of policemen beating Rohingya people went viral. There have been widespread reports of abuses committed by security forces in the aftermath of the attacks on border security forces in Maungtaw in Rakhine State in early October. The Commander- in- Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing denied the reports of abuse during a meeting with his Malaysian counterpart General Dato Sri Dato Sri Dr Haji Zulkifeli Bin Mhoad Zain on 5 December. The two military leaders met in the headquarters of the Myanmar military in Nay Pyi Taw. Myanmar military chief said the security forces had conducted the operation in accordance with the law and the conflict in the Rakhine State was arises because Rohingya people failed to abide by the law. He said Myanmar security forces have not committed any human rights abuses including extra judicial killing, rape and arson attacks against the civilian population. He said different organisation are conducting inquiry into the report of rights abuses. He said those who are found of violating human rights will face legal actions. His comments were published on the Webpage of the Office of the Commander- in -Chief. After comment by the General. a video showing a group of police officers beating Rohingya people in Ko Tan Kauk village in Maungtaw was went viral on the social media during the last week of December. The authorities admitted that the video recorded the actual incident and the police involved in the attack were arrested. A statement released by Office of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said even though the video was circulated on social media on 31 December but it was recorded on 5 November. The video was taken by a policeman while smoking. The State Councillor Office has also denied reports of human rights abuses by security forces in the operations in the aftermath of 9 October attacks on security forces. After the video has surfaced the government’s comment also came under question. Even though some organisations were given access to the conflict affected areas but they have noted that the visit were not conducted in a transparent manner.
