Monks barred Muslim vendors near pagoda

The village monk committee of Thaphan village in Wundwin Township has issued an order to ban Muslim vendors from a market near a pagoda. Although the Thaphan village market is situated on the land own by the pagoda but according to Muslim villagers they have been paying tax to local municipal department. One vendor said the order was issued after a leading monk of Ma Ba Tha gave sermon in the area on 8 November. “All these happen after U Wirathu gave his sermon here, I have been selling in this market from the past 10 years. We have cordial relations among us. We usually donate money and other things to monks no problem among us, they said the ban was for security reason after sermon by U Wirathu,” said an unnamed vendor. The order from the village monk group said vendors from the other religions and the people who are not from Thanphan village are not allow to open shops in the village. According to a local villagers are no Muslims in the village, and there are about 10 Muslims who have shops in the market, who came from other places.
