Four corpses exhumed in Maungtaw

The Myanmar language service of the Voice of America radio said four bodies were found in Maungtaw where allegation of rampant human right abuses reported recently. The local authorities said the bodies of four people who were injured was buried, but still not known who they were and the cause of death are still being investigated. Since violent attacks last October, there have been a series of allegations of human rights abuses in Maungtaw reported. A statement issued by the State Counsellor Office on 21 February, which was posted on the office’s website said, the corpses of one man an three women were found about 300 yards south of Lu Phan Pyin village in Maungtaw township. The statement was taken off only a few minutes after it was posted. The statement said the dead man had head injuries and among the three women, two were found with spine injuries. The spokesperson of the President Office said it was still not clear who killed the four people and the police was conducting investigation into their death. The initial news release from the government said the four dead bodies were found after the authorities conducted the search of the area based on a tip off by a local resident. The international human rights groups have accused Myanmar security forces of committing serious human rights abuses including sexual attack against women, extra judicial killings, arson during their clearing operations in the northern Rakhine State since last October.
