Here is why -
Eight police personnel who were seen in a video abusing arrested Muslim people in Kotan Kauk village in Rathedaung were either jailed or demoted. They include the policeman who took the video, which went viral in late last year.
The No 4 police command said the incident took place in November last year. It said the Ministry has conducted inquiry for two months and punishments were announced during the first week of February.
The 7-Day Daily News reported that five members of No 2 Border Guard Police and three policemen from 36 Security Force received punishments.
One sub Inspector from No 36 Security Force got his service year reduced by one year as punishment and the rest two from the same force were jailed for 60 days. Among the two was Policeman Zaw Myo Hteik who was seen taking the video by using mobile phone.
Among the five policemen from No 2 Border Guard received punishment, a Police Inspector get reduction of his service and retirement benefit by two years, a sub Inspector was demoted to police sergeant and three policemen from the same force got 60 days imprisonment.
