U Thunanda, a member of the Association for Protection of Race and Religion, more popularly known with its Myanmar acronym Ma Ba Tha is facing disciplinary action after he made a political comment in a sermon delivered in Khin Oo Township in Sagaing Region on 3 April. A group of local people filed a complaint against the monk, with the monk supervisory committee, the State Mahanaryaka Committee, after U Thunanda delivered a sermon in which he said he was against amendment of the current constitution. He said U Ko Ni, a key advocate for constitutional amendment has luckily died early otherwise the whole parliament would be dominated by Kular (a derogatory word used in Myanmar to describe Muslims and the people of South Asian countries). The comment on assassinated Muslim lawyer U Ko Ni who worked for the National League for Democracy (NLD) was seen as incitement for religious violence. The local people said the complaint was lodge as the monk’s comment could trigger religious violence in the region as it was in Rakhine State and Meiktila. Reference: Ashin Kaliyana
